Discussing My Search for Warren Harding by Robert Plunket.
Led by former Greenlight general manager Alexis, our Fiction Book Group meets monthly to discuss paperback fiction, reading broadly in contemporary fiction with the occasional diversion into classics.
For June, the group discusses Robert Plunket’s My Search for Warren Harding. A glittering story of literary sleuthing and deceit, Plunket’s comic novel first appeared in 1983, and it garnered immediate and far-reaching acclaim. Set against the fading light of early-1980s Hollywood, My Search for Warren Harding follows our deeply flawed, bigoted, closeted antihero with a passion for Morris dancing and Warren Harding, “the shallowest President in history.” Setting out to find the late President’s now guarded treasure, nothing and no one can stand in Elliot Weiner’s way; and as the words dance across the page — a hysterical, guffaw-inducing punchline around every corner — readers follow as our antihero reaches new lows of humiliation and self-delusion.
