In the past few months, we have become increasingly concerned about the safety of our community, the well-being of our marginalized friends, family, loved ones, coworkers, and neighbors, and the increased threat of illegal deportation and separation. We are excited to partner with NYLAG’s Immigrant Protection Unit to present a free community workshop to help educate our community on their constitutional rights and protections.
In this workshop, we will learn about the difference between federal agencies, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and local police. We will address the different scenarios in which noncitizens may encounter ICE and provide advice on how community members may avail themselves of the protections to which they are entitled under the 4th and 5th Amendments to the United States Constitution. We will also briefly review the deportation process and address any questions attendees may have.
Jorge Eduardo Ramirez Trejo is a Sr. Coordinating Attorney in NYLAG’s Immigrant Protection Unit (IPU). He represents clients in the counties of Brooklyn and Queens as Legal Counsel for the New York Office for New Americans in immigration matters such as asylum, special immigrant juvenile status, U-Visas, family petitions, among many others. Jorge also provides training and workshops for the public on multiple subjects, such as immigrants’ rights when interacting with law enforcement, asylum, deportation, and naturalization. Jorge previously worked at Lutheran Social Services of New York, where he represented unaccompanied minors from Mexico and Central America’s northern triangle. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law and Valdosta State University.
