With artists Hadi Falapishi, Maureen Dougherty, and curator Alison M. Gingeras

Join us in celebrating the release of “Pictures Girls Make”: Portraitures. Curator Alison M. Gingeras and artists Hadi Falapishi and Maureen Dougherty will discuss the genre of portraiture — one that captures the actual conditions, social structures, and day-to-day experiences that form human existence. Light refreshments were served.

Produced on the occasion of the 2023 exhibition at BLUM’s Los Angeles gallery, “Pictures Girls Make”: Portraitures spans from the early 19th century to the present day, brings together over 50 artists from around the world and argues that the portrait is an enduringly democratic, humanistic genre. Moving beyond binary thinking, the exhibition emphasizes the diversity of subjects and complexities of character that artists have captured through various modes of portrait-making. Looking backward and forward, Pictures Girls Make recontextualizes pioneering portraitists who escaped the past century’s narrow first draft while surveying a wide range of contemporary painters. Far from “just girls,” this range of artists has pushed the genre to capture the actual conditions, social structures, and day-to-day experiences that form human existence. Edited by exhibition curator Alison M. Gingeras.
