When: December 7, 2023

Laura Radensky, Chair of the Uptown Interagency Council, will lead the discussion.

Following in the tradition of ESCOTA’s December book club, the Uptown Interagency Council is hosting an intimate gathering before the holidays to share thoughts on “On Vanishing: Mortality, Dementia, and What It Means to Disappear” by Lynn Casteel Harper. This personal and philosophical examination of dementia explores the power and possibilities of reframing dementia in hopeful, humanizing terms.

The book can be purchased through Bookshop, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or your local bookstore. All are welcome, even if you haven’t finished the book. Refreshments will be served as we enjoy a morning of warm conversation and sharing. The author will be present to engage with the group.

Lynn Casteel Harper is an essayist, minister, and chaplain. She serves as the Minister of Older Adults at The Riverside Church in New York City. Before joining Riverside’s staff, Lynn was a nursing home chaplain at a continuing care retirement community, where her passion for dementia and aging justice began. “On Vanishing,” her debut book, was named a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice and appeared on the Gold Foundation’s 2021 Reading List for Compassionate Clinicians. Lynn is a proud member of UIC’s board.
