Black Lit Book Group with Micah
Discusses “My Soul Looks Back” by Jessica B. Harris
Led by Greenlight bookseller Micah, with special appearances from fellow Greenlight booksellers, our Black Lit Book Group meets monthly to amplify the works of past and present Black voices of all genres. All reading frequencies are welcome!
For May, the group discusses “My Soul Looks Back”, a captivating memoir by award-winning writer Jessica B. Harris. With “simmering warmth” (The New York Times), Harris paints evocative portraits of her illustrious friends: James Baldwin, as he read aloud an early draft of If Beale Street Could Talk, Maya Angelou cooking in her California kitchen, and Toni Morrison relaxing at Baldwin’s house in Provence; her role as a theater critic and editor at then-burgeoning Essence magazine; star-studded parties in the South of France; drinks at Mikell’s, a hip West Side club... At the center is Harris’s relationship with Sam Floyd, who introduced her to Baldwin, his best friend. More than a memoir of friendship and first love, “My Soul Looks Back” is a carefully crafted, intimately understood homage to a bygone era and the people who made it so remarkable.
