Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, the 1990 film The Handmaid’s Tale is set in a dystopian future where a totalitarian theocracy, the Republic of Gilead, has seized control of the United States. Due to widespread infertility, the regime enslaves the few remaining fertile women, known as “Handmaids,” and assigns them to the households of the ruling elite to bear children for them. The story follows Kate (renamed Offred), a Handmaid assigned to the Commander and his wife, as she navigates the oppressive system, endures ritualized rape, and risks her life to uncover the fate of her kidnapped daughter while clinging to memories of her past freedom.
