Set in the rainy, muddy Pacific Northwest during the early 1900s, the film follows John McCabe (Warren Beatty), a charismatic but naïve gambler who arrives in the small mining town of Presbyterian Church to establish a brothel. He soon partners with the shrewd and experienced Constance Miller (Julie Christie), who helps him turn the operation into a thriving business. However, their success attracts the attention of a powerful mining corporation, which sends enforcers to strong-arm McCabe into selling. Despite his bluster, McCabe is out of his depth, leading to a tense and tragic confrontation amid the harsh, unforgiving landscape.
