Two Los Angeles detectives, Will Dormer and Hap Eckhart, travel to a small Alaskan town to investigate the murder of a teenage girl. While pursuing the killer, Dormer accidentally shoots his partner in a fog-covered stakeout, then manipulates the scene to hide his mistake. Plagued by guilt and the relentless midnight sun that prevents him from sleeping, Dormer engages in a psychological cat-and-mouse game with the prime suspect, a crime novelist named Walter Finch, who knows the truth about the shooting. As the local detective, Ellie Burr, begins to uncover inconsistencies in Dormer’s story, he races against time to solve the case before his secrets are exposed.
