Directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Paddy Chayefsky, “Network” is a satirical black comedy-drama that critiques the sensationalism and moral decay of television news. The film follows Howard Beale (Peter Finch), a veteran news anchor who, after being fired due to low ratings, has an on-air meltdown and threatens to kill himself live on television. Instead of being dismissed, his erratic outbursts turn him into a ratings sensation, and the network — led by ruthless executive Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) — exploits his madness for profit, transforming the news into lurid entertainment. Meanwhile, Beale’s prophetic rants about media corruption and societal collapse turn him into a messianic figure, blurring the line between madness and truth. The film’s scathing commentary on corporate greed, media manipulation, and the erosion of journalism remains shockingly relevant.
