Directed by Preston Sturges, “The Palm Beach Story” is a screwball comedy about a quick-witted wife, Gerry Jeffers (Claudette Colbert), who leaves her struggling inventor husband, Tom (Joel McCrea), in an attempt to secure a divorce — and a wealthy new husband — to fund his projects. After a chaotic train ride to Palm Beach, where she encounters a quirky millionaire (Rudy Vallee) and his eccentric sister (Mary Astor), Gerry’s plan spirals into a whirlwind of mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, and rapid-fire wit, culminating in a delightfully absurd twist that questions love, money, and marriage.
