Directed by John Brahm, “The Lodger” is a suspenseful psychological thriller set in Victorian London, loosely based on the infamous Jack the Ripper murders. The film follows a mysterious and brooding stranger (played by Laird Cregar) who rents a room from a middle-class family while a serial killer known as “The Avenger” stalks blonde women in the foggy streets. As the lodger’s odd behavior and late-night outings arouse suspicion, the family’s daughter (Merle Oberon), a dancer with blonde hair, becomes increasingly drawn to him, even as danger looms. Meanwhile, a determined Scotland Yard inspector (George Sanders) races to uncover the truth before another murder occurs, leading to a tense and atmospheric climax.
