Directed by Carol Reed and based on Graham Greene’s satirical novel, “Our Man in Havana” is a dark comedy set in pre-revolutionary Cuba. Jim Wormold (Alec Guinness), a struggling British vacuum cleaner salesman, is recruited by British intelligence to serve as a spy in Havana. Desperate for money to support his extravagant daughter (Jo Morrow), Wormold fabricates intelligence reports, inventing imaginary agents and drawing absurd diagrams of vacuum cleaner parts as “secret military installations.” His lies spiral out of control when his fictional network is taken seriously by MI6, leading to real danger as foreign agents begin targeting his non-existent sources. Meanwhile, his charming but suspicious associate Beatrice (Maureen O’Hara) grows wary of his activities. The film blends espionage farce with biting Cold War satire, culminating in a chaotic yet witty climax where Wormold’s deception collides with the deadly seriousness of international intrigue.
