Directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Marlene Dietrich and Clive Brook, “Shanghai Express” is a pre-Code romantic adventure set during the Chinese Civil War. Aboard a tense train journey from Beijing to Shanghai, notorious “coaster” Shanghai Lily (Dietrich) reunites with her former lover, British captain Donald Harvey (Brook), after years apart. When rebel forces hijack the train and hold Harvey hostage, Lily must negotiate with the cunning warlord, Chang (Warner Oland), using her wit and allure to save the man she still loves. Filled with smoky intrigue, sharp dialogue, and Sternberg’s signature visual glamour, the film explores themes of redemption, sacrifice, and the blurred lines between reputation and true character.
