“Sleep Dealer” paints a stark and visually arresting picture of a near-future world where technology has further widened the divide between the wealthy and the impoverished. Memo Cruz, a young man living in a rural Mexican village, yearns for a better life. He discovers that he can remotely operate robotic workers in factories through a network of neural implants, working as a “sleep dealer” from his home. However, his actions unintentionally lead to the destruction of his village, forcing him to flee to the megacity of Tijuana where the lines between reality and the virtual world are increasingly blurred. He seeks refuge with Luz, a freelance writer who connects to the network through virtual reality, and they discover that they are connected in more ways than they realized. The film explores themes of globalization, technological exploitation, and the commodification of labor, while also examining the power of human connection and the search for freedom in a dystopian future where physical presence has become increasingly irrelevant. The film blends elements of science fiction, social commentary, and romance.
