After scoring a hefty drug deal, biker Wyatt (Peter Fonda), nicknamed Captain America, and his friend Billy (Dennis Hopper) set off from Los Angeles on a cross-country motorcycle trip to New Orleans. Sporting long hair, riding their customized Harley-Davidsons, and seeking freedom from societal constraints, they embody the spirit of rebellion and disillusionment growing in America.
Along their journey through the American Southwest, they encounter a diverse cast of characters, including a hippie commune, a drunken ACLU lawyer named George (Jack Nicholson) who joins them on their journey, and conservative small-town folk who represent the establishment they reject.
