Chen Sheng, a former doctor turned ex-convict, embarks on a poetic and dreamlike journey through the landscapes of China’s Guizhou province. Haunted by his past and seeking redemption, Chen sets out to find his neglected nephew, Weiwei, who has been left in the care of his estranged half-brother. As he travels through the winding roads and misty mountains, Chen’s journey becomes intertwined with the lives of others, blurring the lines between reality and memory. He encounters a woman searching for her lost husband, a young boy yearning for his father, and a mysterious clockmaker who seems to exist outside of time. Through these encounters, Chen confronts his guilt and regret, searching for meaning and connection in a world that feels familiar and alien. “Kaili Blues” is a mesmerizing and meditative exploration of time, memory, and the search for redemption, set against the backdrop of China’s stunning natural beauty and rich cultural traditions.
