“Head of State” is a 2003 American political comedy film that marked the directorial debut of Chris Rock, who also wrote, produced, and starred in the movie alongside Bernie Mac. The film’s plot centers around Mays Gilliam, an alderman from Washington, D.C., who becomes the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate after the original nominees die in a plane crash. Initially seen as a ploy to improve the party’s chances in the next election, Gilliam’s campaign takes an unexpected turn when he starts to speak out honestly about major societal issues.

The film explores themes of politics, race, and media influence in American society, often using humor to address serious topics. “Head of State” also features performances by Dylan Baker, Nick Searcy, Robin Givens, Lynn Whitfield, and Tamala Jones. Despite mixed reviews from critics, it has been appreciated for its satirical take on American politics and the electoral process.
