Soul is a 2020 American animated film that explores the meaning of life, passion, and purpose. The film follows Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher who dreams of becoming a jazz pianist. After getting a chance to perform with a famous jazz band, he falls into a manhole and ends up in the Great Before, a place where souls are assigned their personalities and interests before going to Earth. There, he meets 22, a cynical soul who has no desire to live. Together, they embark on a journey to help Joe return to his body and 22 find her spark. The film is directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers and features the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, and Angela Bassett. The film is praised for its original and profound story, stunning animation, emotional impact, and musical score by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste. Soul is the first Pixar film to feature a Black protagonist, and it celebrates the culture and history of jazz music. The film also tackles existential questions such as what makes us who we are, what is our purpose in life, and what happens after we die. Soul is a film that inspires us to appreciate the beauty and joy of living.
