Fences is a 2016 American drama film directed by and starring Denzel Washington as Troy Maxson, a former baseball player who works as a garbage collector in 1950s Pittsburgh. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by August Wilson, who also wrote the screenplay. The film also stars Viola Davis as Rose Maxson, Troy’s wife, who has to deal with his bitterness, infidelity, and resentment. The film explores the themes of family, race, identity, and legacy, as well as the impact of Troy’s choices on his son Cory (Jovan Adepo), his brother Gabriel (Mykelti Williamson), and his friend Bono (Stephen McKinley Henderson).

The film received critical acclaim, especially for the performances of Washington and Davis, who both won Screen Actors Guild Awards and were nominated for Academy Awards, with Davis winning for Best Supporting Actress. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars and was selected by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of 2016
