This story of post-war Germany revolves around a young woman as she strives for material wealth while ignoring human values.

Fassbinder’s allegorical story of post-war Germany revolves around a young woman as she strives for material wealth while ignoring human values.

This screening is a part of a trio of Saturday afternoon screenings taking place in the month of June in observance of Fassbinder’s untimely death at the age of 40.

As a piece of story-telling at once linear, transparent, and classically realist, while also leaving an ambivalence about what it is that makes the ending ambiguous, Maria Braun might be said to gratify the act of meaning-making itself.
