When: June 11, 2022

Lonely widow Emmi Kurowski meets Arab worker Ali in a bar during a rainstorm. They fall in love—to their own surprise, and to the shock of family, colleagues, and drinking buddies. An emotional power that reflects the ethnic tensions within German society.

This screening is a part of a trio of Saturday afternoon screenings taking place in the month of June in observance of Fassbinder’s untimely death at the age of 40.

Ali has acquired cult status in cinephile circles in the last forty years. It has also been a “useful” film, having consequently dramatized questions of migration, labor, gender, and racialization in postwar Germany [...] forty years after its release, the film acquires new meanings in the current European configuration.
