Directed by Mike Nichols, “The Birdcage” is a comedy about a flamboyant gay couple — Armand (Robin Williams), the owner of a drag nightclub in South Beach, and his dramatic partner, Albert (Nathan Lane), the club’s star performer — whose lives are turned upside down when Armand’s son, Val (Dan Futterman), announces his engagement to Barbara (Calista Flockhart), the daughter of a conservative senator (Gene Hackman). When Barbara’s family insists on meeting Val’s parents, chaos ensues as Armand and Albert attempt to pose as a straight couple, leading to a night of hilarious misunderstandings, outrageous disguises, and heartwarming revelations about love, family, and acceptance.
