Lewis Mumford (1895-1990), the noted architectural and social critic, had been telling us for years what is wrong with the way we plan our cities and design our buildings.

Mumford’s critiques serve as an introduction to a short history of architecture in American cities beginning with skyscrapers in Chicago in the 1800s and including the work of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. Critical attention is given to San Franciso’s Daly City, Boston’s Beacon Hill, the projects of the Federal Government, and California’s Marin City. Others appearing in this documentary include the architects Kevin Roche, Nathaniel Alexander Owings, Harry Weese, and John Vinci; the critics Wolf Von Eckardt and Peter Blake; the historian Henry-Russel Hitchcock; the preservationist James Marston Fitch and Patricia R. Harris.
