“Eileen” (2023), directed by William Oldroyd and based on Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel of the same name, is a psychological thriller set in 1960s New England. The film follows Eileen Dunlop (Thomasin McKenzie), a young, socially isolated woman who works at a juvenile detention center and lives with her abusive, alcoholic father. Her mundane and oppressive life takes a dramatic turn when she becomes infatuated with Rebecca St. John (Anne Hathaway), the facility’s glamorous and enigmatic new psychologist.
As Eileen grows increasingly obsessed with Rebecca, she is drawn into a dark and unpredictable relationship that blurs the lines between friendship and manipulation. The story takes a chilling turn when Rebecca involves Eileen in a morally ambiguous scheme, forcing her to confront her desires and the unsettling realities of her life. With its tense atmosphere, complex characters, and psychological depth, “Eileen” explores themes of loneliness, power, and the darker facets of human connection.
