Two days before the United States turns 250, ARTS 14C unveils The Fabric of a Nation — a new exhibition by thirteen artists who spent the spring working with, and against, the symbolism of the American flag.

Each artist was selected through an open call and given free studio space at ARTS 14C to develop their body of work. Their shared material: an extensive collection of donated red, white, and blue fabrics — woven and knit, natural and synthetic — sourced from a Netflix film production and unified only by their association with the colors of the flag.

The brief was deliberately open. Artists were asked to respond to the nation’s Semiquincentennial in any register they chose — patriotic, critical, hopeful, ironic, reverent, conflicted, or all at once. There was no expectation of celebration and no requirement to dissent. The result is a show that holds the full, complicated range of what it means to inherit a national story — told through quilting, weaving, embroidery, garment-making, soft sculpture, and experimental fiber work.

Join us for the opening reception and see how a single palette becomes fourteen very different American statements, although (not shockingly) they do lean toward the critical.
