Celebrate the opening of Overlapping Empires, Samantha Box’s site-wide exhibition at Van Cortlandt House Museum.

Join Van Cortlandt House Museum for the opening reception of Overlapping Empires, a site-wide contemporary art exhibition by Samantha Box.

Installed throughout the historic house, Overlapping Empires brings contemporary art into dialogue with one of New York City’s earliest colonial sites. Through still-life photography and installation, Box explores connections between empire, trade, migration, and memory, inviting visitors to consider the histories embedded in the house and their continuing resonance today.

The evening will include refreshments, time to view the exhibition, and an opportunity to meet the artist.

Overlapping Empires will be on view at Van Cortlandt House Museum from June through August 2026.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Van Cortlandt House Museum’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Accessibility: the exhibition will be installed throughout the historic house, which, at this time, is accessed using stairs. The reception and refreshments will be on the first floor of the historic house, which is accessed using a single flight of stairs. A 360-degree tour of the historic house is available on a tablet in our Welcome Center. The exhibition will be available for online viewing after the opening reception.
